Local Church Initiative Strengthens Community Bonds
In a heartfelt effort to foster a more loving and kind community, the Anglican Parish of Newlands-Paparārangi has embraced a mission of outreach, focusing on building relationships and offering support to the tenants residing in the local council flats.
It began when a parishioner felt a calling to visit the flats regularly and, despite facing challenges and moments of doubt, her perseverance laid the groundwork for meaningful connections that have since blossomed.
Now, the team visits the flats in pairs on a weekly basis throughout the school term, forging genuine bonds with tenants who graciously welcome them into their homes. With open hearts and listening ears, they offer a comforting presence and assistance wherever possible, acknowledging the struggles faced by their neighbours, from health issues to feelings of isolation.
Parishioner, Sue Corbett, who is involved in the initiative, shares her insights, "We're truly grateful for the opportunity to connect with our neighbours in a meaningful way. Each visit is a chance to extend love and support to those who may be facing challenges.
“Undoubtedly, substance abuse casts a shadow over the community, but the team remains steadfast in their commitment to building trust through consistent, compassionate engagement,” she says.
Recognizing an opportunity for collective growth and empowerment, one team member initiated a community garden project behind the church, inviting tenants to participate and fostering a sense of ownership and pride within the community.
Sue explains, "We believe in the power of community-driven initiatives to bring about positive change. Our hope is that the garden project will not only provide a source of fresh produce but also serve as a space for neighbours to come together and support one another."
Additionally, the team extends tangible support through meal offerings from the church freezer, ensuring that no neighbour goes hungry amidst their struggles.
Despite encountering closed doors, their determination to foster a sense of belonging and community remains unwavering. Through daily interactions within the neighbourhood and quarterly community events, such as pancake evenings and Christmas lunches, they continue to bridge divides and cultivate unity within the parish and beyond.
Central to their efforts is a commitment to personal and spiritual growth.
Reverends Rebecca and Richard Apperley lead discipleship huddles and monthly core meetings to support this. These gatherings serve as essential moments of reflection, equipping the team with the courage and guidance needed to respond to the call of service with humility and grace.
Sue expresses how the team’s faith has grown and allowed them to take further steps on this discipleship journey.
"Though we may feel inadequate at times, we heed God's call to love and serve our community, knowing that our collective efforts, no matter how small, can make a profound difference in the lives of those we touch."
Looking ahead, they recognize the need to deepen their engagement through one-on-one Bible study, viewing it not as a challenge, but as an opportunity for mutual learning and spiritual enrichment.
