Diocesan Appeal for the Whakamaru Chapel

Whakamaru is a new building development by the Wellington City Mission that reshapes the way we support and care for our community.

A chapel is being built in the new complex to be a place of rest, of respite and a place to sit with God. Open any time of the day or night, it will be the only 24/7 chapel in inner-city Wellington.

At Synod we gave the Mission $500,000 to support the build and were encouraged, as a diocese, to fund the $365,000 chapel.

Whakamaru, a name gifted by mana whenua means “to shelter and to protect”, will be a life changing intervention; for the people who need the service, but more so for the people who come to help. Whakamaru embodies practical support in one place. It will host a social supermarket, residential accommodation, counselling and medical services and more. Giving to the chapel building project helps the Wellington City Mission provide spiritual support too.

At Advent, we reflect on Hope, Peace, Joy and Love as the Christ child comes to us and enters our world. Supporting this Advent appeal makes space for Jesus; inviting people to sit with Him, at any time, in a new chapel space.

Wellington City Mission's practical support for people in need demonstrates:

  • Aroha/Love,

  • Tumanako/Hope,

  • Whanaungatanga/Kinship, and

  • Manaakitanga/Generosity.

Take a journey through Advent with this in mind.

Everyone is invited to donate to this wonderful cause. As a Movement whānau, let us get behind this Appeal and give generously.

Donations can be made directly via the appeal page or via internet banking using the details below:
