Donors Sought for Kenyan Community Library Project

Pastor Wahu Wanjiku of Nairobi Chapel Ongata Rongai has a dream of setting up an after-school study centre in the informal settlement of Kware.  

She shared this dream with Rev Richard Noble, formerly of St Tom’s Parish in Newtown and now with Brooklyn Anglicans, in 2021 after he visited Kenya the year before and connected with her ministry.  

He says Pastor Wahu recalled how she grew up in Kware and found herself a single parent at the age of 16. However, as a recipient of sponsorship and mentoring, Ps Wahu found hope and went on to complete her education.  

Her desire is to establish an educational initiative for children in Kware to have access to the same opportunities she had.  

Through the non-profit organisation Educational Aid for International Development, set up by Whanganui Parishioners John and Mary Rowan, funds are now being sought to help this dream become reality.

Some might remember a visit, in 2016, from the mission team from Nairobi Chapel Ongata Rongai, Kenya. They spent two weeks in Wellington Diocese and were hosted by St Thomas’, Wellington South. They also spent time with Urban Vision teams, Ngatiawa River Monastery, St Luke’s Youth Group in Waikanae, and enjoyed dinner with Bishop Justin and Jenny Duckworth.  

The following year Richard Noble visited the ‘Newtown-Nairobi’ crew in Kenya, also meeting Pastor Wahu Wanjiku of Nairobi Chapel Ongata Rongai. These friendships were consolidated when Richard returned to Kenya in 2020. 

The Kware Community Library Project continues this connection and support for the people of Kenya.
