Christmas Tent in Eastbourne

Covid played havoc with the St Alban’s children’s ministry over the last three years, so by the end of 2022 it was time for Eastbourne parish to get creative. A team led by Jutta Chisholm took over the local community centre for a Children’s Event on Christmas Eve and created a ‘Christmas tent’ for families of all ages.

“We had no idea how many to expect,” said Jutta, “but people just poured in! We had put together 55 activity packs for children, and they all went, and there were loads of adults too. Families obviously appreciated something to do in that pre-Christmas early evening when children’s energy and anticipation is high, but it’s too early for bed.”

Such was the response that the parish is now planning four such events for 2023. The focus will be on Easter, Matariki, All Saints (instead of Halloween) and Christmas again. “The format is flexible so we can use different venues,” said Jutta. “There’s a load of resources out there which can be drawn on and adapted to suit our community. It’s a great way to introduce Christian stories in a friendly way for non-church families who want their children to know about the faith but don’t know where to start.”
