    Public lecture: What happens in a life? Grace, chance and narrative

    Augustine, bishop of Hippo, is a towering figure in the history of Western thought, philosophy and culture.  In this lecture series, Professor Clark examines Augustine’s central, most influential and contested ideas, exploring their context and origins and assessing their enduring significance.  Gillian Clark is Professor Emerita of Ancient History at the University of Bristol and a Fellow of the British Academy. A prolific author and renowned expert on the social, intellectual and religious history of the later Roman Empire, she is a leading authority on Augustine and his world.
