The Wellington City Mission’s iconic Brown Paper Bag Collection, now in its 11th year, is launching next week! On Thursday 21 June their special Brown Paper Bag and donation insert will be featured in the Dominion Post, giving people the opportunity to donate cash or food items to help those who are in need this winter.
Every day, many Wellingtonians in need receive food parcels through The Mission’s Foodbank service. This can be a huge relief to a struggling family, easing their financial burden and helping them focus on paying bills and other expenses. Many people who are burdened with social isolation or homelessness also come to the Drop-in Centre every day for daytime shelter, care, a place of belonging, and, of course, a hearty meal. In the last financial year The Mission provided over 3,500 food parcels from the Foodbank and over 23,000 meal servings in the Drop-in Centre! Help them continue to offer these services by supporting this year’s Brown Paper Bag Collection.
This collection is something your youth group, women’s group, or your whole congregation can participate in – just simply choose if you would like to support by donating “The Money” or by filling “The Bag” with goods!
If you choose “The Money”:
You will be supporting by raising funds. Every $4 raised provides one healthy, nourishing meal serving for a person in need. Some fundraising ideas include: hosting a Brown Paper Bag dinner event, a plate decorating competition that costs $4 to enter, a Brown Paper Bag Sunday, or a games night themed with “The Money or The Bag”.
If you choose “The Bag”:
You will be supporting by collecting food items. Every bag filled with food supplements a struggling family’s groceries for one week. Some ways to collect the food items include: handing our special Brown Paper Bags out with your church newsletter, or setting up a Brown Paper Bag food collection box on a Sunday.
You can take part in this collection any time from now until the end of July. If you would like to get involved but missed the insert in the Dominion Post, you can collect a City Mission brown paper bag from participating Wellington Z stations, or just use any bag – it’s the content that matters!
Get in touch with Sarah Thomas from The Mission if you’ve got any questions on 04 245 0843 or firstname.lastname@example.org. We can then arrange to give you any material or further information that you need. Thanks for your support and generosity!
