Preaching workshops coming up in June

A series of workshops designed for preachers throughout our diocese is to be offered over two weekends in June.  The Cathedral’s Rev Dr Joe McGarry, who also runs the diocesan Anglican Studies programme and the College of Preachers, will offer the series with themes including expository preaching and purpose-driven communication.

The series will be hosted by St Mary’s Anglican Church in the Parish of Karori.  Registrations are essential and entry is by koha.

The programme:

Friday 15th June, 7pm – 9pm: “How do we prepare sermons?”

  • 7-8pm: What is expository preaching?
  • 8-9pm: The Big Idea of a passage

Saturday 16th June, 9am – 2:30pm:

  • 9-10:30am: What does the text say (basic hermeneutics)?
  • 10:30-11am: morning tea
  • 11am-12:30pm: Purpose-driven communication – where do you want your congregation to go? / Shapes of a sermon
  • 12:30-1pm: own lunch
  • 1-2:30pm: Putting it all together: the science of homiletical architecture

On Saturday the 23rd of June, the series takes a break for Team Training Day in Palmerston North then resumes on the 30th.

Saturday 30th June, 9am – 12:30pm: “How to speak publicly,” or “How not to bore people with your great sermon”

  • 9-10:30am: Speaking so people listen
  • 10:30-11am: morning tea
  • 11am-12:30pm: Smarter every week: the sensitive task of sermon evaluation.

Then on Sunday the 1st of July, Joe will preach at three services at St Mary’s: 8am, 9am and 10:30am on the Lost Sheep (Luke 15:1-7).
