At Synod 2017, Anglican Missions reported that our diocese’s giving was down $20,000 on the expected budget, and Rev John Williams from Shannon-Foxton Parish felt called to action. He writes a challenge to us all:
I have a soft spot for overseas missions, especially Anglican overseas mission. When I see the poverty in some countries compared to our own, my heart goes out to them. When the report was presented at Synod that as a diocese we were $20k behind budget, I quickly divided the $20k by the 60+ parishes in our diocese and came up with $300 per parish that would eliminate the $20k deficit. I floated this idea around the parishioners. It was presented to Vestry who agreed, so Anglican missions should have $300 from the Shannon-Foxton parish. We then asked that it will be put to the rest of the parishes in the Wellington Diocese to do likewise.
So the challenge has been laid! Shannon-Foxton have challenged the rest of us to donate $300 per parish (on average) to Anglican Missions to bring our diocesan giving up to the level it once was at. Do you think your parish could give this, or more, over and above what you already have given? If so, we’d love to hear from you. Drop us a line on firstname.lastname@example.org and let us know how much your parish is going to contribute.
