Marsden students present petition to Parliament

Five Samuel Marsden Collegiate School students were overwhelmed when their online petition to phase out single-use plastic bags in New Zealand received almost 18,000 signatures in two months.

Four of the students arrived at Parliament on the 26th of July to meet the MP for Wellington Central, Grant Robertson., and were featured in both The DominionPost and on 1 News Now.  Mr Robertson received the petition and warmly encouraged them in their work. He told them that the petition would hopefully make it before a Select Committee, at which point submissions would be called for, and the students would have an opportunity to make their case before other Parliamentarians.

“The students are feeling great,” says the school’s chaplain, Sarah King. “They’re very proud of themselves, and we are proud of them too. We’ve been speaking about the need to move from charity to action and activism, and the response has been great.”
