Ascension Day Sung Eucharist Thursday 25th May

Come and join us for a Sung Eucharist at 5.30pm to celebrate Ascension Day with scripture, prayers and music from our Cathedral Choristers.

“Come, Holy Spirit”: join our 24/7 week of prayer at the Cathedral

From Ascension Sunday, 28th May until the Ordination on the 2nd of June, our whole Diocese is joining with the Archbishop of Canterbury’s call for global prayer around the Anglican Communion. As we celebrate our risen and ascended Lord, we wait with joyful expectation for Pentecost, when we celebrate the coming of the promised Holy Spirit. Here at the Cathedral, our doors will be open 24 hours a day for people to pray for the transforming power of the Holy Spirit in our cathedral, diocese and wider community.

Come and join us to pray either by yourself, or by taking inspiration from one of our prayer stations which will be positioned around the cathedral for the week, focussed on ‘bringing the light of Christ’.

The Feast of Pentecost Sunday 4th June

Fifty days after the great celebration of Easter, we celebrate the ‘birthday’ of the Church and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. As we reach the end of our week of 24/7 prayer for the Holy Spirit’s transformative power in our Diocese, we are delighted to welcome Bishop Eleanor Sanderson, our newly ordained Assistant Bishop, as our preacher at our three services.

8am: Said Eucharist in the Lady Chapel

10am: Sung Eucharist with our four choirs leading our music, with the setting ‘Missa Sancti Nicolai’ by Franz Joseph Haydn. We receive the opportunity for personal prayer for renewal in the power of the Spirit, and at the end are handed a lighted candle and are given the commission to go out and share the Good News with ‘every race and nation’.

5pm Choral Evensong  Canticles: Gloucester Service by Herbert Howells.

A warm welcome awaits at your Cathedral.
