Side by Side mentoring helps church communities connect with families

side by sideFamilies are not always seen at church on Sunday. They are not often at our meetings, our liturgies or involved in our ministries. How do we as a faith community connect with them?  The Children and Families team invites people from across the Diocese to attend an information and training session from Side-by-Side Mentoring.

Side-by-Side Mentoring trains everyday people to be the link between our families and our church community.  Mentors connect with parents, listen to what they need to talk about, affirm them and link them to any support they need.  A Side-by-Side Mentor becomes a loving face of the faith community that assures parents they are valued and not alone in their parenting journey.

Side by Side Mentors are:

  • people who are members of a Christian faith community,
  • people who work well with others,
  • people who can listen and remain confidential, and
  • people who are able to empathise.

An information evening for Vestry and Parish leaders and those interested in becoming a mentor, will be held on Tuesday the 10th of April from 7:30pm to 9:00pm at St Francis Xavier School, Main Road, Tawa, Wellington.  For information you can email Colette Stevens, Diocesan Children and Families Enabler, on colette@wn.ang.org.nz or phone her on 04 471 8581.
