Commonwealth Day to be celebrated at Cathedral

Everyone is invited to join this annual observance this Monday the 13th of March, cpeace building Commonwealthelebrating New Zealand’s place in the Commonwealth family of 52 states, covering 30% of the world’s population.

This year’s theme is “A Peace-Building Commonwealth” and the service will include messages from Her Majesty the Queen and the Prime Minister, reflections from peace-builders in New Zealand, with Commonwealth representatives, youth, musicians and the Cathedral Choir.

Commonwealth Secretary General Patricia Scotland, QC, said: “At a time of increasing instability and uncertainty in the world, the Commonwealth family of nations in its rich diversity becomes an ever more-needed source of strength and hope for all its members.”

Peace-building is implicit in the Commonwealth Charter principle that “international peace and security, sustainable economic growth and development and the rule of law are essential to the progress and prosperity of all.”

Those attending the service are asked to be seated by 5.45pm.
