You may have read that the Wellington City Council has decided to scrap the Christmas Santa Parade this year and replace it with a new event. This will involve closing off both ends of Lambton Quay, so that it becomes exclusively a pedestrian mall, for the weekend 10-11 December from midday to 8pm on Saturday and midday to 6pm on Sunday.
The Council of Churches believe this will provide us with a golden opportunity to remind the city of Christ in this year’s Christmas festivities. The aim is to have more of a Community Christmas, celebrating our diversity of culture and ways of celebrating Christmas.
We would like to invite participation in any way of celebrating Christmas eg:
- groups or choirs singing carols
- mimes or plays
- music with Christmas themes
- stalls to sell Christmas cards
- any way you celebrate Christmas
- a nativity scene
This could all be done at any time over the two afternoons. Congregations could participate on their own or in collaboration with others. Schools might be keen to join in.
This can work around your schedule. For example, a singing group and their musicians might decide to sing at midday and 3pm on the Saturday but at 2pm and 4pm on the Sunday to fit in with church services.
We have been in contact with the WCC organisers of the event who have indicated their enthusiasm for these suggestions.
It is just 5 weeks away! Please register your interest by contacting our Secretary, Robyn Radomski at firstname.lastname@example.org or 027 2018766 who will be coordinating on behalf of The Council of Wellington Churches.
