This past Saturday, preachers and would-be preachers from around the Diocese gathered at St Mary’s, Levin to hone their skills. The keynote speaker, Dean Digby Wilkinson, guided attendees through his favourite tools for communicating the Gospel.
In the afternoon, attendees participated in workshops of their choosing—covering topics like Preaching for Discipleship, presented by Reverend Ellie Sanderson, and Pedagogical Sermon Preparation, presented by Michael Brantley. Other workshops were presented by Archdeacon Wendy Scott, Reverend Mark Johnson, Nigel Dixon and Scottie Reeve. All of the day’s presenters emphasised the importance of presenting a Gospel-centred message; they then offered some tools for helping the message stick in the hearts and minds of listeners.
Feedback from the day has been overwhelmingly positive. Many attendees were impressed by the quality of the presenters and content on offer. Attendees felt equipped to carry newly-discovered practical skills and spiritual inspirations into their parish preaching contexts. They also appreciated the warm hospitality shown by St Mary’s, Levin.
Preachers around the Diocese are also looking forward to next winter’s 10-credit Diploma of Anglican Studies paper on preaching. You may contact Archdeacon Wendy Scott on email firstname.lastname@example.org for more information about Anglican Studies—including information about enrolling in or auditing the upcoming preaching course.
