The College of Discipleship is a new initiative that aims to help people find out how they fit into the wider Anglican tradition and to create a culture of theological discipleship. The courses begin at level 5 (first-year university level) and are held as block courses during weekends at various marae around the country. Learning in community is an effective way to grow as disciples.
Attendees range from students to retirees, and provisions are being worked on to allow parents to come with their children. About a third of participants audit the courses (that is, participate without doing the assessments), as the aim is to create disciples rather than scholars.
The courses are run in partnership with St John’s College (level 5) and Bishopdale College (level 6).
Those studying theology, biblical studies, or church history (in any way and in any institution) are invited to join the discipleship community on block weekends. Whether studying through Otago, Laidlaw, or Carey, students are invited to bring their laptops and work while lectures are happening in other parts of the marae, and join the wider community for prayers and meals.
