Vacancy: Diocesan Monitors, Diocese of Christchurch (Closes 13 December 2019)

The Diocese of Christchurch has valued the services of its Diocesan Monitor, the Very Reverend Bruce Hansen, a Presbyterian minister, for many years and through many situations in which complaints and questions have arisen about the behaviour and professional conduct of its ordained and lay ministers and leaders. With the retirement of Bruce from this role at the end of 2019, new appointments are sought. In particular we seek both a male and a female Monitor.

The role of the Monitors is to work for the Bishop of Christchurch on cases as referred to them by the Bishop, with consideration to the canons of the Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia, the statutes of the Diocese of Christchurch, ethical guidelines of the Diocese, processes of handling complaints according to these canons and statutes, and general principles of justice with respect to complainant and any who are subject of a complaint.

The Diocesan Monitor will have support and advice from the Diocesan Monitoring committee. It should be noted that the key canons dealing with ministry standards in the Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia are likely to be revised at General Synod in May 2020, and as a consequence complaints concerning misconduct (rather than unsatisfactory performance of duties) are likely to be referred to a national monitoring officer.

The position requires persons who have experience of church life, a degree of independence from the Diocese of Christchurch, maturity of life and some professional expertise to bring to the role from a relevant field such as law, ethics, human resources, education. An ability to write a clear, concise yet comprehensive report on each situation which is investigated is essential, along with a full driver’s licence.

Payment is made as cases arise and is a negotiated hourly rate, including the writing of reports. Travel costs will be reimbursed (noting that applicants need to be based within the Christchurch Diocese).
