The Diocesan Council wishes to let the diocese know of the recent closure of Box Hill Kids, the early childhood education centre run by Onslow Parish. Recent times have proved particularly tough for small community-based early childhood centres, and the parish had reached the stage in which the drain on parish resources was no longer sustainable.
Rev Rosie Newport writes: “We had looked carefully at options for saving the centre but unfortunately, the space we have available is simply insufficient to have expanded to the extent necessary to make the centre more viable. Fortunately, all children and staff looking for new positions were able to be placed.”
“We gathered together with children and parents (past and present), teachers and parishioners to say farewell on 27 June. This was one of those ‘happy/sad’ occasions in which we were able to celebrate the 17 years or so of Box Hill Kids existence, the friendships made by both parents and children, and the opportunity enjoyed to introduce pre-schoolers to Christ in the family atmosphere of the centre. Parents spoke warmly of how much they had valued that family spirit and the values that underpinned the whole ethos of Box Hill Kids. We prayed together for the future well-being of all those who had been through the doors over the years.”
The parish is now going through a discernment process in which we are seeking the Holy Spirit’s guidance of how they can best continue to shine a light for Christ in the Ngaio/Khandallah community.
