Chrism services offer a chance for us to gather with our bishops, and for them to bless the oils to be used in anointing ministry and ordination in the coming year. In the past, parishes have been expected to supply their own oil, however this year, our Cathedral whānau have decided to bless us with a gift of oil to be made available at each of the three Chrism services.
“This year we will supply enough containers of oils for ministry units to have fresh oils for 2019,” says the Dean, Very Rev David Rowe. “You will receive one container of Chrism oil and one of olive oil, so you can manage the strength of the oil you use when anointing people. These will be blessed at the services and a set will then be available for you to take back to your ministry unit if you wish.”
Ministry units are still welcome to bring your own, or to bring non-olive oil-based products, and to place them in the baskets with the other oils for blessing, ready to be retrieved at the end of the service. Also, a small quantity of the oils will be blessed and kept at the Cathedral so that additional supplies can be obtained should they be needed throughout the year.
We are thankful to our Cathedral congregation who have made this gift possible for us this year.
