Patricia Cooper is our dedicated Refugee Resettlement Co-ordinator, and she provides this update on our work together with the Catholic Archdiocese of Wellington to support the resettlement work of the New Zealand Red Cross.
We are now preparing to welcome the first intake of former refugee families resettling in Wellington, as our fourth year of involvement with this programme begins. I would like to take this opportunity to give a big thank to everyone who helped with our intakes last year. Without your help these resettlements would not happen.
Earlier this year Archdeacon Stephen King and I met with Catholic Archdiocese and the Red Cross, when we were told the number of families coming into Wellington will be less than the previous three years. This is due to the opening up of new areas for resettlement and shortage of houses in the Wellington area especially larger homes (Read the RNZ News story here).
How can you help?
We need volunteers to be part of the Checking Team – checking for gaps, equity and quality control in the household goods delivered to Wellington Cathedral of St Paul. The first intake starts Sunday 24 February, helpers are needed for Monday 25 and Tuesday 26 (See the Facebook event here.
The hours are 9.45 am starting with morning tea and briefing until 4pm on Monday and Tuesday. The finish times may vary according to how quickly the checking goes. You will be given instructions to help with the checking. We are expecting there to be only five households for checking. Morning and afternoon tea and lunch are provided.
If you are interested in setting up a house for a family, please let me know that as well.
Thank you for your support of the former refugee intake into Wellington.
