Defence industry forum moves north, faces faith-based backlash

After dramatic scenes outside Wellington’s stadium last year, the New Zealand Defence Industry Association’s annual forum has been moved to Palmerston North’s main stadium and will occur there next week, on the 31st of October and 1st of November.  Dubbed by protesters as a “weapons expo” for companies that profit from war and killing, the event will again be the subject of protest action from civic and faith-based groups this year.

Rev Andy Hickman from our All Saints whānau in Palmerston North is heavily involved again, and says that planned events include an open church service at All Saints on the theme of “Healing and Hope,” a protest march outside the expo at Central Energy Trust Arenato be attended by Archdeacon Wendy Scott and Bishop Justin Duckworth, and a multi-faith peace gathering in Te Marae-o-Hine (The Courtyard of the Daughter of Peace), the name bestowed on The Square in the centre of the city.  The events are being co-ordinated by Peace Action Manawatū, and you can find out more information on this poster, or on their Facebook page.  You can also read their press release here.
