For the past three years, faith groups, community organisations and unions in the Hutt Valley have been campaigning for Hutt City Council to adopt the Living Wage. A few months ago, this campaign had a big win, when the Council formally voted to lift all directly-employed workers to the current NZ Living Wage. As a direct result of the campaigning, over 200 low-paid workers have received a pay increase.
Living Wage Hutt Valley is hosting a community celebration at Avalon Intermediate (1041 High Street) on Thursday 25 October, 5.30-7pm. The Mayor and Deputy Mayor will attend and the event will celebrate the steps Council has taken, and highlight the need to extend the Living Wage to other Council workers employed via contractors, such as cleaners.
This will be a fun event with Cook Island and Samoan dancing, kapa haka, speakers and plenty of food.
