Pohangina Valley hangs out for hangi

The Parish of Pohangina staged their annual community hangi recently, and for the first time, the numbers attending were so high that they’ve had to ditch the parish hall for the local community centre.  The hangi, co-hosted by the Ashhurst President’s Rugby Club, draws a crowd of about 250 – 300 people each year, according to the parish’s Ric Foxley.  He tells us that preparations run all day on Saturday with 20 people chopping vegetables in the parish hall, while others prepare the meat – three sheep, two pigs and numerous chooks!

Bishop Justin joined the parish for their Sunday morning worship, and then stuck around for the hangi afterwards, diligently prepared by the members of the rugby club – starting at 5am on the day of the big feast!

Ric says the event is always a popular opportunity for the parish to engage with their local community, and to collect donations for the local foodbank.
